Ileana Vizcarrondo, MBA VP Education & South Chapter Leader
|
When Ileana Vizcarrondo joined the
APICS Puerto Rico chapter as a student
member in 2001, she had a vision of
what she wanted to achieve with her
career: to become a leader who helped
others. Through her APICS membership,
she acquired the knowledge and
experience to realize her dream. “APICS
gave me the opportunity to learn skills
that are applicable in all aspects of life
and to develop the commitment and
leadership to overcome any challenge,”
Vizcarrondo says.

APICS student membership helped steer Vizcarrondo’s career in the right direction with an introduction to the operations
management profession. She continued to develop her leadership skills as a professional member by volunteering to serve on
the chapter’s board of directors. Now, she applies the APICS body of knowledge when solving problems in the workplace. Like
many APICS members, she keeps moving toward her goals and career success through ongoing involvement in the association.
Leadership development
Vizcarrondo found that a college education and association membership complement one another. While studying for her
bachelor’s degree in materials management at the University of Puerto Rico at Bayamon, she volunteered to serve on the
APICS student chapter’s board of directors and as vice president of the Materials Management Students Association. While in
college, she gained practical experience coordinating educational events and conducting membership campaigns. “This was a
lifetime experience because I learned that, with commitment, anything could be possible,” Vizcarrondo says.
After she earned her bachelor’s, Vizcarrondo continued to pursue a master’s degree in business administration and joined the
APICS professional chapter. She took on the positions of vice president of administration and vice president of education—her
current role on the board of directors. “Both volunteer roles gave me a great opportunity to direct the CPIM, CIRM, and C.P.M. meet
professors who are committed to high-quality education.”
APICS on the job
Along with leadership development, the Puerto Rico chapter provided Vizcarrondo with a powerful tool to gain entry into the
workforce. After three years as an APICS leader, Vizcarrondo learned of an internship program through the Puerto Rico chapter’s
online job service. She worked as a manufacturing cost control representative in the materials department at Caribe General
Electric, where she collaborated on several projects. She had the opportunity to use some of her APICS knowledge in inventory
control, lean manufacturing, and more.
For the past ten months, Vizcarrondo has worked as a logistics and supply chain analyst with Medtronic Operations Company.
She is responsible for scheduling production units and subassemblies, as well as the implementation and maintenance of
replenishment systems. Vizcarrondo sees how the APICS body of knowledge applies in every step of the supply chain. “The
APICS body of knowledge helped me understand the relationship between business practice and theory,” Vizcarrondo explains.
“The integration of both is necessary to have success in all business areas.”
In her current position, for example, she was challenged to provide better customer service. By applying different techniques,
such as Pareto analysis, she and her colleagues were able to identify constraints, whether relating to production capacity,
materials availability, or overall process development. Once the constraints were understood, Vizcarrondo and her team could
determine how to achieve the service level target.
From student member to chapter officer, Vizcarrondo has contributed much of her time to APICS and her dream of becoming a
leader, and she has achieved much in return. Currently, she is pursuing the CPIM certification to validate her
knowledge in operations management. In addition to serving as vice president of education, she is also South Chapter leader of
the APICS Puerto Rico Chapter, supporting membership and education activities.
“By being a member of the APICS community, we can discover new challenges and renew a passion for learning.” she says.
“APICS is a symbol of excellence and commitment in the operations management field. By becoming members, we gain
experience that applies beyond operations management.”
